Sustainable engineering and life cycle systems

The world is facing challenges in all dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental. While the ultimate goal is to reduce the impact of human activities, there is increasing pressure with the inevitable trend of increasing population and affluence. In response, engineers are developing innovative technologies and products to fulfil the increasing demand with a minimal impact.

Sustainable engineering and life cycle systems is a holistic approach to evaluate the impact associated with all the stages of product’s (or service’s) life cycle from raw material extraction through materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use, repair and maintenance and disposal or recycling.

A variety of tools and expertise are developed within this context such as simulation and modelling, life cycle assessment and life cycle costing, dynamic material flow analysis, energy and eco-efficiency. Besides a quantitative analysis of the impacts, this research enables engineering solutions and policy making towards a sustainable future.
