Thesis Title

Atomistic simulations of the deformation and microstructural evolution during cold spraying

Research overview

Cold spray is a versatile additive manufacturing to even maintain in-service surfaces. The cold spray process is characterised by extreme deformation regimes during the impact on the substrate. This PhD project aims to predict the emerging microstructure after the impact of particles during the cold-spray process using a multiscale simulations approach bridging the atomistic scale of defect interaction and micrometer scale of the deformation. In general, the resulting strength of the cold-spray coating can be assessed from the microstructure and defects in these deformed particles.
