Turbulent Boundary Layer Over Ship Hull Roughness: The Key for Net-Zero Shipping
Research overview
Ship hull roughness, including weld seams, coating irregularities, and docking-block regions, can substantially increase ship resistance, fuel consumption, and emissions. Although surface conditions are routinely documented, their hydrodynamic effects and evolution between docking intervals remain poorly quantified, limiting the justification of costly mitigation measures. This research will investigate how localized and time-evolving roughness affects turbulent boundary layers and drag. It will develop and validate a predictive framework using hull-condition data to estimate current and future drag penalties. The resulting experimental dataset and forecasting tool will support maintenance, mitigation, and dry-docking strategies for more efficient and sustainable maritime operations.
