Thesis title

Empathic Communication Design for Shared Control in Physical Human–Robot Interaction with Collaborative Robots

Research overview

ndustry 5.0, which emphasises human-centered values and the role of Human–Robot Collaboration (HRI), has the potential to accelerate the adoption of collaborative robots (cobots). The challenges of cobot integration become most visible in physical HRI, where humans and cobots share space and contact forces; their interactions create direct motion limitations. However, operators may struggle to comprehend the cobot's intent and physical limits, thereby causing cognitive overload and trust miscalibration. To address this, this research introduces empathy as a communication design strategy by translating complex system constraints into intuitive, operator-centered feedback. The aim is to help humans regulate expectations and calibrate trust, ensuring safer and more effective HRI.
