Thesis title
A Multiscale Approach to Feathered Wing Fluid Simulation
Research overview
The macroscale influence of wing geometry remains well explored within biological flyers, however inherent feather porosity is commonly disregarded as a modelling assumption. This research aims to incorporate the porosity associated with microscale fractal-like feather structures within a macroscale understanding of bird flight. With geometric information which inform the structural composition of individual feather vanes, porosity models may be included to extend a finite volume representation of gliding bird flight. Using data from the well-studied barn owl, this improved understanding of porosity may help to explain features contributing to its unique silent-flight properties.
