Thesis title
From Evidence to Standard: A Translational Engineering Approach to Indoor Air Quality in Public Spaces
Research overview
This research examines indoor air quality (IAQ) and airborne disease transmission in public and community buildings across varied typologies, ventilation systems, and building ages. Although effective IAQ technologies exist, adoption is constrained by limited engineering evidence, translational frameworks, and policy guidance, particularly in Australia where no enforceable IAQ standards apply to occupied public spaces. Addressing this gap, the project undertakes multi-site baseline monitoring, evidence-based retrofit selection, staged implementation, and longitudinal evaluation. Interventions include filtration, heat recovery ventilation, HVAC optimisation, and hybrid strategies. Outcomes will compare effectiveness, feasibility, scalability, and energy impacts to inform standards and large-scale IAQ improvement programs development.
