Thesis Title

An experimental and modelling study of a highly efficient, hydrogen fuelled, internal combustion engine

Research overview

Motivated by global warming and the imperative to phase out fossil fuels, this research explores the potential of hydrogen as a zero-carbon fuel. It is focused on developing a high-efficiency, hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine for power generation. Using an innovative system for direct fuel injection and ignition, high power and efficiency are being sought whilst avoiding detrimental abnormal combustion phenomena. Water injection, blending of hydrogen with natural gas and the use of efficient engine cycles are being investigated to these ends.
