Thesis Title

Heat transfer for turbulent boundary layers over the textured surface

Research overview

The forced convective heat transfer in turbulent boundary layers formed over rough surfaces is critical to many applications, from internal cooling in gas turbines, to heat transfer at the Earth’s surface. For this project, we have upgraded an existing wind tunnel facility to add a precisely controllable heated surface which can be reconfigured with a variety of surface textures. Detailed measurements in the thermal and momentum boundary layers formed over these surfaces permit us to quantify the heat transfer efficiency of these surfaces. A class of highly ordered surface textures (riblets) are also investigated, which promise enhanced heat transfer efficiencies.
